How can I enrol and pay for the course?

To sign up for a course in our Spanish school, you can easily register either online on our website, send us the registration form by e-mail ( inscription@escuela-elcano.com ) or do it in person at the administration desk of our school. You also need to take the level test on our webpage before the course starts so that we can allocate you in the right group according to your Spanish level. After we have accepted your enrolment, you will need to pay a reservation fee (150€ for the course or 200€ for course + accommodation), which is non-refundable.

The payment for the course should be transferred at least one week before the start of the course. The deposit for accommodation is 50€ and should be paid on your first day at school. The deposit will be refunded at the end of your stay unless you break any of the school or accommodation rules.

Once we have received your payment, we will send you a confirmation e-mail with detailed information about your course and accommodation, if applicable. It is very important to provide us with the correct e-mail address, so we can easily get in touch with you about any changes to your enrolment. If you require accommodation, you should take into consideration that the availability of student flats is limited during high season.

Please keep all the receipts for your records, you may need them when you arrive. It is possible that some supplements need to be paid on the first day at school. If you are staying in a flat offered by the school, you need to provide us with your credit card number in case of considerable damage to the flat or loss of keys.

Is it important to take the level test?

Yes, it is important that every student takes the level test on our School’s website (www.escuela-elcano.com), if he/she already has some knowledge of Spanish. The test should be taken at least one week before the start of the course, after you have received the confirmation of enrolment. The test will help us determine your level of Spanish and place you in the correct class. If you do not take the test we cannot guarantee that you will be placed in the appropriate group according to your level. Every Elcano student will receive the information about their language level and class timetable before the start of the course.

What are the groups’ timetables and students’ responsibilities?

The intensive course groups consist of 3 to 10 students. Other Elcano courses can have groups of 4 to 15 students. If, at the beginning of a contracted course, there are less than the minimum of 3 students, the school reserves the right to change the course into private classes, taking into account the educational objectives and reduce the academic hours of the course by 50%. The learning programme will remain the same and the students will receive the same content of the course, and can benefit from smaller groups and more personal learning in a shorter period of time.

The timetable or schedule of the courses is divided into three possible blocks, but the school cannot guarantee a specific one. It depends on various circumstances, such as the courses that are currently running, number of students, Spanish level, and type of course etc. The timetables will be available one week before the course starts. The Intensive courses take place from Monday to Friday, and can be started on every Monday. For other courses, please check the school’s annual calendar.

The minimum age to attend in Elcano courses is 17 years, except for private lessons and special courses for young people. The school retains the right to make exceptions. All students must respect the academic norms and conduct themselves according to the rules established by J. S. Elcano School during classes, activities and in the accommodation. In extreme cases of violation of law or misconduct, the School reserves the right to expel a student. The course fee will not be refunded.

When is the school closed?

The school is closed for Christmas holidays from 23rd December until 6th January and national and regional bank holidays. These days will be partially reimbursed if they coincide with intensive courses. Please keep yourself informed on our website. Reimbursement will not apply to any other course types.

There will not be any reduction in course fees if the student commences or finishes mid-week nor for any national or local bank holidays that coincide with a course, unless otherwise communicated by the school.

How can I cancel the course?

The enrolment fee is non-refundable (50€ administration and material, 100€ reservation fee, 50€ reservation of accommodation, if applicable).

If you have already paid the total amount of the course price, we will reimburse it in full (except reservation fee) if you cancel in written form at least 30 days before the course is due to start. All the transfer expenses will be paid by the person who cancels. To cancel, please notify us via contact@escuela-elcano.com. In case of cancellation less than 30 days before the start of the course, we will not reimburse the course fees.

What do I need to know about the accommodation?

In addition to the course and student accommodation fees, students must also pay a deposit of 50€ for the accommodation, which is refundable upon completion of the course providing the following conditions are met:

  • Leaving the accommodation perfectly clean and tidy as per the clean-up plan and school rules
  • The student must be in the flat at the agreed time to receive the refund

If a student causes any damage to the accommodation he/she must immediately notify the School. If on arrival at the flat, the student notices any damage caused by previous occupants and does not give notice on the first opportunity, he/she might be held responsible for the damage. If none of the occupants take responsibility for the damage, the cost of repairs will be divided evenly among all of the occupants.

There are basic rules of behaviour in the student accommodation. In extreme a student may be expelled without a refund. Along with the course and accommodation fees the student has to pay 50€ deposit, which will be refunded under the conditions of “Basic Rules of Behaviour”:

  • Special care must be taken not to disturb the neighbours between midnight and 8 a.m.
  • Maintaining order and cleanliness in the room and communal areas.
  • The student is responsible for any damage to the flat, whether intentional or not.
  • If no one in the flat takes responsibility for the damage, the reparation costs will be divided between all occupants.
  • In case of serious lack of discipline, continuous bad behaviour, parties in the flat etc. the student may be evicted without recompensation of rent or deposit paid.
  • In case of any damage due to third parties all expenses will be paid by the flat occupants.
  • In case of leaving the accommodation in bad conditions or dirty, the student will lose the deposit.
  • It is forbidden to have parties in the flat.
  • It is forbidden for other people to spend the night in the apartment, without notifying the school.

The rent of flats with air conditioning includes an additional charge for responsible use of electricity (100kw/week). When moving out, the student has to check the electricity meter. In case of excessive usage the student will have to pay extra.
