Is it important to take the level test?

Yes, it is important that every student takes the level test on our School’s website https://escuela-elcano.com/quiz/spanish-test-2  if he/she already has some knowledge of Spanish. The test should be taken at least one week before the start of the course after you have received the confirmation of enrolment. The test will help us determine your level of Spanish and place you in the correct class. If you do not take the test we cannot guarantee that you will be placed in the appropriate group according to your level. Every Elcano student will receive information about their language level and class timetable before the start of the course.

What are the groups’ timetables and students’ responsibilities?

The intensive course groups consist of 3 to 10 students. Other Elcano courses can have groups of 4 to 15 students. If at the beginning of a contracted course, there are less than a minimum of 3 students, the school reserves the right to change the course into private classes, taking into account the educational objectives and reduce the academic hours of the course by 50%. The learning program will remain the same and the students will receive the same content of the course and can benefit from smaller groups and more personal learning in a shorter period of time.

The timetable or schedule of the courses is divided into three possible blocks, but the school cannot guarantee a specific one. It depends on various circumstances, such as the courses that are currently running, the number of students, the Spanish level, and type of course, etc. The timetables will be available one week before the course starts. The Intensive courses take place from Monday to Friday and can be started on every Monday. For other courses, please check the school’s annual calendar.

The minimum age to attend in Elcano courses is 17 years, except for private lessons and special courses for young people. The school retains the right to make exceptions. All students must respect the academic norms and conduct themselves according to the rules established by J. S. Elcano School during classes, activities, and in the accommodation. In extreme cases of violation of law or misconduct, the School reserves the right to expel a student. The course fee will not be refunded.

When is the school closed?

The school is closed for the Christmas holidays from 23rd December until 6th January and national and regional bank holidays. These days will be partially reimbursed if they coincide with intensive courses. Please keep yourself informed on our website. Reimbursement will not apply to any other course types.

There will not be any reduction in course fees if the student commences or finishes mid-week nor for any national or local bank holidays that coincide with a course unless otherwise communicated by the school.

How can I cancel the course?

Cancelation of intensive courses: The enrolment fee is never refundable (150€ reservation fee, 50€ reservation of accommodation, if applicable). If the student has already paid the total amount of the course price, we will reimburse it in full (except enrollment fee for administrative expenses) if the student cancels it in written form at least 30 days before the course is due to start. In case of cancellation less than 30 days before the start of the course, we will not reimburse the course fees. All the bank transfer expenses will be paid by the student.

Other types of courses and programs: The enrolment fee is never refundable 20%. If the student has already paid the total amount of the course/program price, we will reimburse it in full (except 20%  for administrative expenses) if the student cancels it in written form at least 30 days before the course is due to start. In case of cancellation less than 30 days before the start of the course, we will not reimburse the course fees. All the bank transfer expenses will be paid by the student.

What do I need to know about the accommodation?

In addition to the course and student accommodation fees, students must also pay a deposit of 50€ for the accommodation, which is refundable upon completion of the course providing the following conditions are met:

  • Leaving the accommodation perfectly clean and tidy as per the clean-up plan and school rules
  • The student must be in the flat at the agreed time to receive the refund

If a student causes any damage to the accommodation he/she must immediately notify the School. If on arrival at the flat, the student notices any damage caused by previous occupants and does not give notice on the first opportunity, he/she might be held responsible for the damage. If none of the occupants take responsibility for the damage, the cost of repairs will be divided evenly among all of the occupants.

There are basic rules of behavior in student accommodation. In extreme, a student may be expelled without a refund. Along with the course and accommodation fees, the student has to pay 50€ deposit, which will be refunded under the conditions of “Basic Rules of Behaviour”:

  • Special care must be taken not to disturb the neighbors between midnight and 8 a.m.
  • Maintaining order and cleanliness in the room and communal areas.
  • The student is responsible for any damage to the flat, whether intentional or not.
  • If no one in the flat takes responsibility for the damage, the reparation costs will be divided between all occupants.
  • In case of serious lack of discipline, continuous bad behavior, parties in the flat, etc. the student may be evicted without recompensation of rent or deposit paid.
  • In case of any damage due to third parties, all expenses will be paid by the flat occupants.
  • In the case of leaving the accommodation in bad conditions or dirty, the student will lose the deposit.
  • It is forbidden to have parties in the flat.
  • It is forbidden for other people to spend the night in the apartment, without notifying the school.

The rent of flats with air conditioning includes an additional charge for responsible use of electricity (100kw/week). When moving out, the student has to check the electricity meter. In the case of excessive usage, the student will have to pay extra.

For a longer stay, you must apply for a visa. You can do this directly in Spain. Otherwise, you can easily contact the Spanish Embassy or the Spanish consulate in your home country and apply for a visa there. Once in Spain, an extension of the visa or residence permit can be requested at the “Policía Nacional” (National Police).

Citizens from EU member states get medical assistance with the presentation of their national insurance card (E-111 European Health Insurance Card with EU mark). Please consult your insurance company before going to Spain.

Non-EU citizens should seek advice in the insurance companies or in the Spanish embassy in their own country.
