The pilgrimage of Santa Faz is just around the corner and therefore we would like to inform you about all the important facts of this cultural event.
The event Santa Faz is a Catholic Pilgrimage which takes place each year on the second Thursday after Holy Thursday, this year on the 7th of April 2016, in Alicante and unites more than 300.000 pilgrims.
The 8-kilometres-walk of the pilgrims starts at the cathedral San Nicolás de Bari and ends at the monastery Santa Faz, where the holy relic of Santa Faz of Alicante is treasured. It´s a linen sheet with the illustrated “face” of Jesus Christ, held by the saint Veronica who has wiped the bloody face of Christ on his crossroad with this linen sheet.
This pilgrimage is about 500 years old and it is tradition that all participants are wearing the tipical costume which is a black blouse and a scarf in the colours of the city Alicante: white and blue.
It is also typical that all around the monastery are Rosquillas (sweet and deep-fried pieces of cake) and Mistelas (fruit juice) offered. Also there are many street-stands with arts and crafts and it is usual that all pilgrims bring their own food supply and eat together with the other pilgrims under the free sky.
